Over the next couple of months, I’ve dedicated myself to showing you how you can build gift-worthy Modern Farmhouse inspired wood creations for less and the first item on the list is?! Reclaimed Alphabet Wood Coasters!
While it isn’t the most glamorous of gifts, let’s face it! We all have furniture. We all have drinks placed on that furniture. But how about all of those leftover watermarks?
When they asked for a “rustic” and/or “aged” furniture piece, I can almost guess that’s not what they meant! Help your loved ones protect the furniture they love with these unique reclaimed wood coasters. And the best part? It’ll only cost you a few dollars to make! So let’s get to it!

Tool List
Instructions
Step 1: Make a straight edge on the board
Cut 1/8th of an inch off each end of the board to make it straight on your miter saw.
Step 2: Cut the coaster to size
Use a tape measure and speed square to mark 4 inches from the end of the board using a pencil and cut on your miter saw. Repeat 4 times.
Step 3: Sand the coasters
Grab an electric sander or 80 grit sandpaper piece to round the edges and sand the top and bottom of the coaster.
Step 4: Make your stencil
Dust off the sawdust and bring your coasters inside. Now it’s time to stencil it out!
I made my stencil with my Cricut Explore One using: removable vinyl and transfer tape. If you don’t have a Cricut, you can print off the letter on a Microsoft Word document on cardstock paper and use an x-acto knife to cut out the letter. Either way, you’ll need to download the font “Sitka Display” from Microsoft and install it on your computer. Once you’ve installed it, type the letter you want in Word or in Design Space and set the font size to 234. Print and/or cut the stencil out.
Step 5: Apply your stencil
Once your stencil is made, place your stencil in the center of the coaster. Use a foam brush and chalk paint to dab the paint across the stencil. A quick tip is to remove the stencil before the paint dries. If you are using the cardstock method, be sure to go slow and to make sure the sides are down completely when you are dabbing the paint on the stencil.
Step 6: Add polyurethane coats
After the paint has dried completely, add two coats of polyurethane according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
And ta-da! Now you’ve got some Alphabet Reclaimed Wooden Coasters to place in someone’s stocking at Christmas. Although a set of 4 Alphabet wood coasters like this retail on Pottery Barn’s site for $36 or $9 a piece, I made these beauties for just a few dollars with leftover paint, paintbrushes, and sandpaper I had sitting around my house. And you can, too!
