INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Pick 2 pallet boards
After taking your reclaimed pallet apart, pick up two boards that are at least 5.5″ wide by 10″ long. The thickness or height of the pallet boards will need to be the same.
Step 2: Cut the boards to size
Cut 1/8th of an inch off one side of each of the boards and use a tape measure and speed square to cut one board to 9″ long and one board to 6″ long.
Step 3: Mark the attachment
Grab your tape measure and speed square. From one end of each board that you cut, measure and mark 2″ from the bottom with a pencil. With the height of your pallet boards in mind, create a rectangular pencil mark starting from the 2″ line you drew extending to the width of the pallet boards. You will need to leave at least .5″ from one side of the boards, as shown below, as to not rip the entire board completely apart.
Step 4: Cut the attachment
Using your table saw or scroll saw, cut 2 horizontal lines following the pencil marks from step 3 like in the image below. Gently use a chisel and hammer or scroll saw to remove the attachment pieces, but gently as to prevent from hurting the pallet wood.
Step 5: Cut charging holes
Make 3 charging holes (to hold the charging cable). They will need to measure .5″ wide x .25″ long. You can either use a chisel and hammer or a scroll saw to do this depending on what you have in your shop. See the image below to see where the holes will need to be placed:
Step 6: Measure and cut the accent pieces
Grab your tape measure and measure the width of the pallet board. You’ll want to rip down some pallet boards to that height on your table saw to attach those boards to the front and top of the charger. After using your table saw, measure how long the boards need to be and cut them to length on your miter saw. You can see where I placed my accent pieces in the image to the right:
Step 7: Attach the accent pieces
Using a brad nailer, attach the accent pieces to the tray using 3/4 inch brad nails.
Step 8: Add finish
Sand your charger with 80 grit sandpaper until butter smooth and add two coats of polyurethane following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 9: Add a charger
When dry, place the two wood pieces together and add a charger. Instead of using a regular charger, I utilized my LetsCom Wireless Charger so I wouldn’t have to plug in my phone every time I come to my desk. You can purchase it on Amazon here.
Finally, I have a way to store and charge my cell phone in style and now you can, too!
