A couple of years back, I created this Restoration Hardware-Inspired Trestle Dining Table for a lovely couple who wanted the look for less. And while I love its intricate column design, for $3,000, I’d much rather build than buy. Although my dining table isn’t an exact replica, my plan allows you to be creative in building your own column design that best matches your aesthetic. Check out my free plans below to see how you can create your own Restoration Hardware-inspired Trestle Dining Table for less!

INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Cut and rip the boards to size
Using your miter and table saw, cut and rip all of your boards to size. Boards shown below are for one column only- top boards and braces are excluded from the image.

Step 2: Make the column bases
Using a countersink bit and power drill, attach the bottom baseboards, top baseboards, and footpads together. The top portion shows what it looks like without footpads, but I prefer the footpad option as it gives slight elevation to the piece!

Step 3: Create the columns
Attach the 2 x boards to the center of the top and bottom column bases from Step 2 using pocket hole screws.

Step 4: Attach the crown molding
Using a brad nailer, attach the crown molding to the 2 x middle column boards. I went to the hardware store and found ones that corresponded well together, but you can create whatever design best fits your aesthetic. Details on what crown molding I used are included in my printable plans!

Step 5: Secure braces to columns
Attach the columns together using 2 x braces on both the top and bottom using pocket hole screws. I got a bit eager with adding the stain around this step, but I would wait until the final step to add finishing touches.

Step 6: Attach the top to the base
Create, attach, and center the top to the base using drywall screws with assist from the brace pieces in Step 5.

Step 7: Sand and add finish
Lastly, sand your piece with 80 grit and 120 grit sandpaper and finish with paint or stain and 2 coats of polyurethane. I utilized the white wash technique after staining to add a distressed look to the piece.
